Environmental Awareness activities for the students of the 2nd EPAL Komotini

Through the zEROwASTER's project, which is carried out on the occasion of the energy upgrade projects carried out at the school

The reason for an educational program that will help to raise awareness among the students of the 2nd EPAL for environmental protection and the transfer of these benefits to the wider society, is the Energy Upgrade and power generation projects from a PV station that are taking place in the shell of the building that houses the EPAL and the 1st General High School of Komotini.

This program is called zEROwASTER's, the official presentation of which was held at the Lyceum on Monday, March 4, with the participation of Eco Active, which implements it, the Municipality of Komotini, which finances the energy upgrade project of the contractors who have undertaken it and the students of the school.

As the Director of the 2nd EPAL, Mrs.Lemonia Darginidou, stressed, the school is being upgraded in terms of energy by the Municipality of Komotini, but not only they should be concerned with energy upgrading and the environmental footprint, the members of the EPAL, teachers and students should be trained as well.

This is why they have partnered with Eco Active to implement an environmental program that will help students, teachers and parents in general environmental management, which they hope will continue after the two years of the program.

Transfer of know-how from the school to the whole

zEROwASTER's, funded by the Green Fund, was presented by the project manager, Ms Artemis Tsolaki, who stressed that it is an environmental awareness project that aims to inform and sensitize students, parents and teachers about climate change and the reduction of CO2 emissions.

The innovation of the programme, according to Ms.Tsolaki, is that the actions of the programme will be carried out within a building in which energy upgrading interventions are carried out in order to maximise the benefits of the intervention in the building, while at the same time achieving a reduction of the environmental footprint, raising awareness of the building users (students, teachers) and transferring know-how from the student environment to the wider community.

The programme will run for two years, with the educational programmes to be completed in May this year, and visits to local businesses will be made to inform students about the ways in which they help to minimise carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere and the recycling methods they use.

In addition, there will be information on green careers and field visits, while students will be informed about the importance of advocacy campaigns and given guidance on how to develop their own campaign.

But the action will not stay only at the 2nd EPAL, as they aspire to create a network of zEROwASTER's at local and European level by using the ERASMUS student exchange programmes, but also by organising a multi-thematic event, at the end of the programme, entitled "Environmental Awareness Week, Became a Zerowaster", which will include the implementation of a workshop to present the environmental initiatives developed by schools all over the country, together with those of the 2nd EPAL.
