The Green Professions: The Future of Work and Sustainability

On Friday, 29 November 2024, the Amphitheatre of the 2nd EPAL Komotini hosted a very interesting event on "Green Professions and the Future". The event was implemented in the framework of the programme zEROwASTER's - Innovative Actions for Citizens, with the funding of Green Fund and to inform students about opportunities in the green economy sector.

Panagiotis Pappas, Career Advisor and keynote speaker of the event, presented the key trends and perspectives that emerge from the transition to a sustainable economy.

What was discussed

Pappas began his speech by analysing the impact of the 4th Industrial Revolution in shaping the labour market, stressing that technological developments are directly linked to the development of green jobs.

He then presented examples from the field of renewable energy, such as solar and wind energy, which offer new career opportunities. He also referred to energy upgrading of buildings, an area of growing demand, and in the sustainable agriculture, which combines traditional practices with modern technologies to protect the environment.

Classic and Unknown Professions

Particular reference was made to linking traditional professions, such as engineering, with new practices that focus on sustainability. "The green economy does not replace, but evolves traditional forms of work," Pappas said, and highlighted the unknown professions of the future, such as experts in recycling and high-tech waste management.

Perspectives and Advice

The speech concluded with a presentation of the opportunities offered by the green economy, both at national and European level. Pappas urged students to follow developments in the sector and invest in acquiring skills that will make them competitive in the new labour market.

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of cooperation with local authorities and companies, as well as the possibility of participation in programmes such as the ZEROwASTER's, which promote sustainable development.

Message to students

The event concluded with a call for students to become protagonists in shaping a better future. "Sustainability is the key to protecting the planet and social well-being. Green careers are not just an option, they are an opportunity to make a difference," concluded Pappas.

This initiative is another step towards creating a generation that combines knowledge with action, building a strong foundation for a sustainable society.
